Week 3 - Oh So Salty!
Below are some pictures I took when I visited the Great Salt Lake one day. I had soooo many questions about the lake, the salt, the animals and the plants! I decided to do some research and came across some really cool information on Utah's Online Library. See if you can find answers to some of my questions using a great resource called EBSCO.
|
*First, watch this tutorial video.
|
*Then, log on to Utah's Online library with the password I sent through Class Dojo and go to EBSCO: Elementary Schools to do research on the Great Salt Lake.
|
Questions about the Great Salt Lake |
1. Why is the lake so salty?
2. Do any animals live in the Great Salt Lake? 3. Has the size of the lake changed over time? 4. How deep is it? 5. Can you swim in it? |
Week 4 - What's Shakin'?
With the recent earthquakes around Salt Lake City, I wanted to learn more about earthquakes. What causes them? When was the last time Utah had an earthquake? What's the largest earthquake that has ever been recorded? To start my research I went to SORA to find some books. Click here to watch my tutorial/read aloud on SORA.
Then, click here to log in to SORA and have fun reading or listening to books that interest you. (Your login information is your regular school computer login). *Don't forget, if you have a public library card, you can link it to your Salt Lake City School District account.
You will also have access to this cool mini lesson from Mystery Science until June 30th! Click on the Mystery Science icon

Week 5 - It's a bird, it's a plane...No, it's a cloud!
Week 6 - Full STEAM Ahead!
One of my favorite things about being a teacher and a librarian is getting to know students and engaging them in the learning process. I recognize that reading and literacy may not be every students' favorite thing, so, I try to provide a variety of materials and resources in the library for every student to enjoy. I hope to spark students' curiosity and motivate them to use their skills and strengths to become lifelong learners, problem solvers, and critical thinkers.
At school, I have created a Makerspace cabinet with all sorts of activities to explore. Now, it's your turn...let's see what creative things you have been doing at home.

Week 7 - Guess That Genre!
When I was a kid, I had a hard time finding the right books. After many trips to the library with my mom, listening to stories, reading on my own, and seeing what my friends were reading, I discovered that I enjoyed mysteries. If you haven't discovered your favorite book genre or an author you love, check out some of these activities and see what catches your eye.
Week 8 - Where Does Our Food Come From?
I came across some fun things to try at home.
|
An ever-changing view of foodThese are some pictures that I have taken of a couple "food experiments" I have done during the Covid-19 quarantine. I got a sourdough starter from a friend and have been making my own bread and pizza crust. I also have planted some tomato seeds and pepper seeds that are ready to be planted outdoors. In addition, I sometimes get eggs from a friend who has chickens and love all the colors they come in. Do you know why many of the eggs we see in stores are bright white? Finally, you might recognize the picture to the left...these are our school planter beds. Do you remember what we planted? Garlic! Look how much it has grown!
|
This week I would like you to do some investigating on the food we eat. Watch my video below to get started.

Check out this article on Food Chains that I found on Gale Kids Info Bits.
Week 9 - Did You Hear That?
Have you ever taken the time to stop and "smell the roses"? Sometimes we get in the habit of moving through our day without taking a minute to appreciate our surroundings. I challenge you this week, to find a safe and comfortable place where you can sit silently for 2 minutes. I want you to simply listen. What do you hear? Keep listening. If you are able to open a window or sit outside, see if you can hear birds chirping, the wind blowing, or leaves rustling. You might notice sounds of cars driving or people talking, but keep listening...It's pretty cool to focus on sounds. I was outside doing some work in our yard and I heard a neighbor moving her lawn, a dog barking, cars driving by, and a dove cooing in the tree! So, give it a try and see what sounds you notice.

Week 10 - Choose Your Own Adventure
Since summer is officially around the corner, I thought it would be fun to give you some ideas of things you can do right here in Salt Lake City.
Or come up with a different idea... |
